For Cu 2+ and CO 2 , which will behave as a Lewis acid toward OH – in water? (A) Only CO 2 (B) Only Cu 2+ 2+ (C) Neither Cu nor CO 2 (D) Bot

Answers (1)

Species which donate electrons are known as Lewis acid. Whereas species which accept electrons are known as Lewis bases.

When a neutral atom of copper looses two electrons then it occupies a +2 charge. Whereas carbon dioxide  (CO_{2}) is a neutral compound as it has no charge.

Thus,  CO_{2} is neither lewis acid or base.

Hence,  Cu^{2+} will act as a lewis acid  towards OH^{-}  in water.
