Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R).

Assertion (A): \mathrm{Cu}^{2+} in water is more stable than \mathrm{Cu}^{+}.
Reason (R) : Enthalpy of hydration for \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}is much less than that of \mathrm{Cu}^{+}.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

Option: 1

Both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)

Option: 2

(A) is not correct but (R) is correct

Option: 3

(A) is correct but (R) is not correct

Option: 4

Both (A) and (R) are correct but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)

2 \mathrm{Cu}^{+} \rightarrow \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}+\mathrm{Cu}

The stability of \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}(aq) rather than \mathrm{Cu}^{+}(\mathrm{aq}),  is due to the much more negative \Delta_{\text {hyd }} \mathrm{H} of \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}(\mathrm{aq}) than \mathrm{Cu}^{+}(\mathrm{aq}), which more than compensates for the second ionisation enthalpy of \mathrm{Cu}.
