Given below are two statements. One is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R.

Assertion A: The first ionization enthalpy for oxygen is lower than that of nitrogen.

Reason R: The four electrons in 2p orbitals of oxygen experience more electron-electron repulsion.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

Option: 1

Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A.

Option: 2

Both A and R are correct but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.

Option: 3

A is correct but R is not correct.

Option: 4

A is not correct but R is correct.

As we have learnt,

\mathrm{ \text { Ionization energy: } O<N}

This can be justified by

(i) Oxygen has a p^4 configuration and two out of the four '2p' electrons must occupy same orbital. So they experience more electron-electron repulsion.

(ii) This is because of the extra stability of the half filled p^3 configuration of Nitrogen

Hence, the correct answer is option (1)
