Given below are two statements : one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R).
Assertion (A) : The ionic radii of  \mathrm{O}^{2-}$ and $\mathrm{Mg}^{2+}are same.
Reason (R): Both \mathrm{O}^{2-}$ and $\mathrm{Mg}^{2+} are isoelectronic species.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

Option: 1

Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).

Option: 2

Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).

Option: 3

(A) is true but (R) is false.

Option: 4

(A) is false but (R) is true.

As we have learnt,

\\\rightarrow \text{Ionic radius order }\Rightarrow \mathrm{Mg^{+2}<O^{2-}}\\ \\\rightarrow \text{Both }\mathrm{Mg}^{2 +} \text{ and O}^{2-} \text{are isoelectronic with } 10 \; \mathrm{electrons}.

Thus, Assertion (A) is false while Reason (R) is true.

Hence, the correct answer is Option (4).
