Given below are two statements. One is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R. Assertion A : Sharp glass edge becomes smooth on heating it upto its melting point. Reason R : The viscosity of glass decreases on melting. Choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.
Option: 1 A is true but R is false
Option: 2 Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.
Option: 3 A is false but R is true.
Option: 4 Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
Answers (1)
Sharp glass edges become smooth on heating upto its melting point. The melting of glass causes the liquid to take a rounded shape to minimise the surface area. This is because of the surface tension in the liquid molecules. Hence, (A) is correct.
The viscosity of glass decreases on melting. This is because of weaker intermolecular forces in the liquid state. Hence, (R) is also correct.
However, the Assertion (A) is not explained by the Reason (R ) given.
Hence, the correct answer is option (2).
