Given below are two statements :
Statement I : In a diatomic molecule, the rotational energy at a given temperature obeys Maxwell's distribution.
Statement II : In a diatomic molecule, the rotational energy at a given temperature equals the translational kinetic energy for each
molecule.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
Option: 1 Statement I is false but Statement II is true.

Option: 2 Both Statement I and Statement II are false.

Option: 3 Both Statement I and Statement II are true.

Option: 4 Statement I is true but Statement II is false.

Statement I is true as

In a diatomic molecule, the rotational energy at a given temperature obeys Maxwell's distribution.

Statement II is false as

For diatomic molecule
Translational degree of freedom =3
Rotational degree of freedom =2
So
molecule. Translation kinetic energy of each molecule,
K_{T}=\frac{3}{2} k T

where k is constant
and Rotational kinetic energy,
K_{R}=2\left(\frac{1}{2} k T\right)

i.e

\mathrm{K}_{\mathrm{R}}=\frac{2}{3} \mathrm{~K}_{\mathrm{T}}
