The ratio of densities of nitrogen and oxygen is 14:16. The temperature at which the speed of sound in nitrogen will be same at that in oxygen at 55\degree C is

  • Option 1)

    35\degree C

  • Option 2)

    48\degree C

  • Option 3)

    65\degree C

  • Option 4)

    14\degree C

v = \sqrt{\frac{\gamma RT}{M}} \Rightarrow \frac{T_{N}}{T_{O}} = \frac{M_{N}}{M_{O}}

\Rightarrow \frac{T_{N}}{273 + 55} = \frac{14}{16} = \frac{7}{8}

\Rightarrow T_{N} = 287 K = 14 ^{o} C

Effect of temperature on speed of sound -

\because \frac{P}{\rho }= \frac{RT}{M}

\therefore V= \sqrt{\frac{\gamma RT}{M}}

- wherein

V \alpha \sqrt{T}

T is in Kelvin

So velocity increses with increase in temperature.
