An ideal gas expands in volume from 1\times 10^{-3}m^{3}\; to\; 1\times 10^{-2}m^{3} at 300 K against a constant pressure of  1\times 10^{5}\, Nm^{-2}. The work done is

  • Option 1)

    – 900 J

  • Option 2)

    – 900 kJ

  • Option 3)

    270 kJ

  • Option 4)

    900 kJ.

As we learnt in

Reversible Isobaric Process -

W=P\left ( V_{f}-V_{i} \right )

- wherein

P_{gas}= constant

Since pressure of gas is defined during whole of the process and hence the process must be reversible

W=-P\Delta V=-10^{5}\times (1\times 10^{-2}-1\times10^{-3})=-900J

Option 1)

– 900 J

this is correct option

Option 2)

– 900 kJ

this is incorrect option

Option 3)

270 kJ

this is incorrect option

Option 4)

900 kJ.

this is incorrect option
