Q

# I have a doubt, kindly clarify. - Electromagnetic Waves - JEE Main

A plane electromagnetic wave travels in free space along the x-direction. The electric field component of the wave at a particular point of space and time is $E=6\; Vm^{-1}$ along y-direction. Its corresponding magnetic field component, B would be :

• Option 1)

$6\times10^{-8}$ T along x-direction

• Option 2)

$2\times10^{-8}$ T along z-direction

• Option 3)

$2\times10^{-8}$ T along y-direction

• Option 4)

$6\times10^{-8}$ T along z-direction

Views

$E_{o}=6\; V/m$ along y

Wave travels along x

So apply

$E=BC$

$\Rightarrow B=\frac{E}{C}=\frac{6}{3\times 10^{8}}=2\times 10^{-8}T$

& direction of wave is given by $\vec{E}\times \vec{B}$

So $\vec{B}$ is along positive  Z axis

So $\vec{B}=2\times 10^{-8}$ T along z- direction

Option 1)

$6\times10^{-8}$ T along x-direction

Option 2)

$2\times10^{-8}$ T along z-direction

Option 3)

$2\times10^{-8}$ T along y-direction

Option 4)

$6\times10^{-8}$ T along z-direction
