A plane electromagnetic wave travels in free space along the x-direction. The electric field component of the wave at a particular point of space and time is E=6\; Vm^{-1} along y-direction. Its corresponding magnetic field component, B would be :

  • Option 1)

    6\times10^{-8} T along x-direction

  • Option 2)

    2\times10^{-8} T along z-direction

  • Option 3)

    2\times10^{-8} T along y-direction

  • Option 4)

    6\times10^{-8} T along z-direction

best_answer

E_{o}=6\; V/m along y

Wave travels along x

So apply

E=BC

\Rightarrow B=\frac{E}{C}=\frac{6}{3\times 10^{8}}=2\times 10^{-8}T

& direction of wave is given by \vec{E}\times \vec{B}

So \vec{B} is along positive  Z axis

So \vec{B}=2\times 10^{-8} T along z- direction

Option 1)

6\times10^{-8} T along x-direction

Option 2)

2\times10^{-8} T along z-direction

Option 3)

2\times10^{-8} T along y-direction

Option 4)

6\times10^{-8} T along z-direction
