An unknown transistor needs to be identified as a npn or pnp type.  A multimeter, with +ve and −ve terminals, is used to measure resistance between different terminals of transistor.  If terminal 2 is the base of the transistor then which of the following is correct for a pnp transistor ?

  • Option 1)

    +ve terminal 1, −ve terminal 2, resistance high

  • Option 2)

    +ve terminal 2, −ve terminal 1, resistance high

  • Option 3)

    +ve terminal 3, −ve terminal 2, resistance high

  • Option 4)

    +ve terminal 2, −ve terminal 3, resistance low

As we learnt in

Transistor -

Three layered semiconducting device .

NPN or PNP

- wherein

1.    Emitter is heavily doped

2.    collector is moderately doped .

3.    Base is lightly doped & very thin

In a transistor, Emitter Base is forward Biased and for amplification purpose resistance should be high.

For pnp; Base should be at negative potential.

Correct option is 1.

Option 1)

+ve terminal 1, −ve terminal 2, resistance high

This is the correct option.

Option 2)

+ve terminal 2, −ve terminal 1, resistance high

This is an incorrect option.

Option 3)

+ve terminal 3, −ve terminal 2, resistance high

This is an incorrect option.

Option 4)

+ve terminal 2, −ve terminal 3, resistance low

This is an incorrect option.
