In an irreversible process taking place at constant T and P and in which only pressure-volume work is being done, the change in Gibbs free energy (dG) and change in entropy (dS) , satisfy the criteria

  • Option 1)

    (dS)_{V,E}< 0,(dG)_{T,P}< 0

  • Option 2)

    (dS)_{V,E}> 0,(dG)_{T,P}< 0

  • Option 3)

    (dS)_{V,E}= 0,(dG)_{T,P}= 0

  • Option 4)

    (dS)_{V,E}= 0,(dG)_{T,P}> 0

As we learnt in

Spontanous process -

\Delta G= \Delta H-\Delta T

- wherein

For spontanouse process \Delta G must be negative.

For spontaneous reaction dS > 0 and dG should be negative i.e < 0

Option 1)

(dS)_{V,E}< 0,(dG)_{T,P}< 0

this is incorrect option

Option 2)

(dS)_{V,E}> 0,(dG)_{T,P}< 0

this is correct option

Option 3)

(dS)_{V,E}= 0,(dG)_{T,P}= 0

this is incorrect option

Option 4)

(dS)_{V,E}= 0,(dG)_{T,P}> 0

this is incorrect option
