Calcination is the process of heating the ore in the absence of air. Calcination of a metal ore makes it very porous and they lose their water of crystallisation.

Eg.   \mathrm{Fe}_2 \mathrm{O}_3 \cdot \mathrm{XH}_2 \mathrm{O}(\mathrm{s})+\text { Heat } \rightarrow \mathrm{Fe}_2 \mathrm{O}_3(\mathrm{~s})+\mathrm{xH}_2 \mathrm{O}(\mathrm{g})
