One litre of a mixture of CO and CO2 is passed through red hot charcoal in tube. The new volume becomes 1.4 litre, find out % composition of mixture by volume. All measurements are made at same P and T.

Initial volume =1L

Final volume =1.4L

Let \mathrm{V_{CO_2}=x \quad and \quad V_{CO}=(1-x)}

\begin{array}{l} (1-x)+2 x=1.4 \\ 1+x=1.4 \\ x=0.4 \end{array}

\mathrm{\therefore \% C O_{2}=40 \%, \% C O=60 \%}

Therefore, Option(3) is correct.
