As learned in concept

Preparation of Colloids -

Peptization

- wherein

During peptization, the precipitate absorbs one of the ions of the electrolyte on its surface. This causes the development of positive or negative charge on precipitates, which ultimately break up into smaller particles of the size of a colloid.

 Peptization process takes place when fresh precipitate of Fe(OH)_3 is shaken with Fe(Cl)_3 (electrolyte or peptizing agent).  In this, Fe(OH)_3 precipitate is converted into colloidal solution.

Fe(Cl)_3\rightarrow Fe^{3+}+ 3Cl^{-}

Fe(OH)_3 + Fe^{3+} \rightarrow [Fe(OH)_3Fe]^{3+}+ 3Cl^{-}
