A point source emits sound equally in all directions, in a non-absorbing medium. Two points P and Q are at  a distance od 2 m and 3 m from the source. The ratio of the intensities of the waves at P and Q is

  • Option 1)

    9:4

  • Option 2)

    2:3

  • Option 3)

    3:2

  • Option 4)

    4:9

Answers (1)

best_answer

Intensity \alpha \frac{1}{distance^{2}} \Rightarrow \frac{I_{1}}{I_{2}} =\left ( \frac{d_{2}}{d_{1}}\right )^{2}

\frac{I_{1}}{I_{2}} =\left ( \frac{3}{2}\right )^{2} = 914

Intensity of periodic sound waves -

I= \frac{\Delta P{_{m}}^{2}}{2\rho v}

- wherein

\Delta P_{m}= Maxmium pressure change

\rho = density

v= velocity of sound
