Let the time taken to save Rs. 11040 be (n + 3) months. For first three months, he saves Rs. 200 each month

\begin{aligned} &\ln (n+3) \text { months, }\\ &3 \times 200+\frac{n}{2}\{2(240)+(n-1) \times 40\}=11040\\ &\Rightarrow \quad 600+\frac{n}{2}\{40(12+n-1)\}=11040\\ &\begin{array}{lr} \Rightarrow & 600+20 n(n+11)=11040 \\ \Rightarrow & 30+n^{2}+11 n=552 \\\Rightarrow & n^{2}+11 n-522=0 \\ \Rightarrow & n^{2}+29 n-18 n-522=0 \\ \Rightarrow & n(n+29)-18(n+29)=0 \\\Rightarrow & (n-18)(n+29)=0 \end{array}\\&\therefore \quad n=18, \quad n=-29 \text { , neglecting }\\ &\therefore \text { Total time }=(n+3)=21 \mathrm{months} \end{aligned}
