In an engine the piston undergoes vertical simple harmonic motion with amplitude 7 cm.  A washer rests on top of the piston and moves with it.  The motor speed is slowly increased. The frequency of the piston at which the washer no longer stays in contact with the piston, is close to :

  • Option 1)

    0.1 Hz

  • Option 2)

    1.2 Hz

  • Option 3)

    0.7 Hz

  • Option 4)

    1.9 Hz

Answers (1)

As we learnt in

Time period of oscillation of simple pendulum -

T=2\pi \sqrt{\frac{l}{g}}

- wherein

l = length of pendulum

g = acceleration due to gravity.

 Washer contact with piston = N = 0

A = 7 cm = 0.07 m

Frequency of Piston

f=\frac{\omega}{2\pi}=\frac{1}{2}\sqrt{\frac{g}{A}}=\sqrt{\frac{1000}{7}}\times\frac{1}{2\pi}=1.9\ Hz

Correct option is 4.

Option 1)

0.1 Hz
