 The following observations were taken for determining surface tension T of water by capillary method :

diameter of capillary, D=1.25×10−2 m rise of water, h=1.45×10−2 m. Using g=9.80 m/s2 and the simplified

relation T= \frac{rhg}{2}\times 10^{3} N/m  , the possible error in surface tension is closest  to:

As we learnt in

Ascent Formula -

\frac{2T\cos \Theta }{\rho gr}

- wherein

T- surface Tension

r- radius\: of\: capillary\: tube

\rho -liquid\: density

\theta - Angle\ of \ contact

 T=\frac{rng}{2}\times 10^{3}

\frac{\Delta T}{T}=\frac{\Delta r}{r}+\frac{\Delta h}{h}

 \Rightarrow\ \;100\times \frac{\Delta T}{T}=\left(\frac{10^{-2}\times0.1}{1.25\times 10^{-2}} +\frac{10^{-2}\times 0.1}{1.45\times 10^{-2}} \right )\times 100

    =(0.8+0.689)=1.489

    100\times \frac{\Delta T}{t} = 1.489 %

\simeq 1.5 %

Correct option is 4.
