A jar is filled with two non - mixing liquids 1 and 2 having densities \rho _{1}and \rho _{2} respectively. A solid ball, made of a material of density \rho _{3} is dropped in the jar. It comes to equilibrium in the position shown in the figure. Which of the following is true for

\rho _{1},\rho _{2}\: and\: \rho _{3} ?

  • Option 1)

    \rho _{1}< \rho _{3}< \rho _{2}

  • Option 2)

    \rho _{3}< \rho _{1}< \rho _{2}

  • Option 3)

    \rho _{1}> \rho _{3}> \rho _{2}

  • Option 4)

    \rho _{1}< \rho _{2}< \rho _{3}

As we learnt in

Density -

It is the ratio of mass of substance to the volume occupied by the substance while density of a body.

-

From figure it is clear that the liquid 1 floats on liquid2. The lighter liqud floats over heavier liquid i.e. \rho_{1}<\rho_{2}

Also \rho_{3}>\rho_{2} otherwise the ball would have sink to the bottom of the jar.

Also \rho_{3}>\rho_{1} otherwise the ball would have floated in liquid.

\therefore\ \; \rho_{1}<\rho_{3}<\rho_{2}

Correct option is 1.

Option 1)

\rho _{1}< \rho _{3}< \rho _{2}

This is the correct option.

Option 2)

\rho _{3}< \rho _{1}< \rho _{2}

This is an incorrect option.

Option 3)

\rho _{1}> \rho _{3}> \rho _{2}

This is an incorrect option.

Option 4)

\rho _{1}< \rho _{2}< \rho _{3}

This is an incorrect option.
