The \left(\frac{\partial E}{\partial T}\right)_{P} of different types of half cells are as follows :
\begin{array}{cccc} \text { A } & \text { B } & \text { C } & \text { D } \\ 1 \times 10^{-4} & 2 \times 10^{-4} & 0.1 \times 10^{-4} & 0.2 \times 10^{-4} \end{array}

(Where E is the electromotive force)

Which of the above half cells would be preferred to be used as reference electrode?

Option: 1

A

Option: 2

B

Option: 3

C

Option: 4

D

Answers (1)

{\left(\frac{\partial E}{\partial T}\right)_{P}} of different half cells are given which represents the change in EMF of a cell with temperature.

A cell showing lesser variation of EMF with respect to temperature is preferred as it can be used over a wide range of temperature without much deviation from standard EMF of a cell.

Here, \mathrm{\left(\frac{\partial E}{\partial T}\right)_{p}} is lowest for Half cell "C" which is \mathrm{0.1 \times 10^{-4}}

Hence, the most preferrable half cell to be used as a reference electrode is C.

Option (3) is correct.
