Hall - Heroult process is used in the electrolytic refining of Aluminium.

A steel vessel with the lining of carbon and graphite rods is used in the process. The carbon lining acts as cathode while graphite acts as anode.

The overall reaction occuring in the process can be represented as

2 \mathrm{Al}_{2} \mathrm{O}_{3}+3 \mathrm{C} \rightarrow 4 \mathrm{Al}+3 \mathrm{CO}_{2}

Option (2) is correct.
