1) Add BaCl_2 solution which gives white precipitate

Ba^{2+} +SO^{2-}_3 \rightarrow BaSO_3 \: White

2) Add an H_2O_2 solution warm and then add a BaCl_2 solution

SO^{2-}_3 +H_2O_{2} \rightarrow SO^{2-}_4 +H_2O 

Ba^{2+}+ SO^{2-}_4 \rightarrow BaSO_4 (white)

BaSO_4 is insoluble in HCl & HNO_3

White ppt of BaSO_4 \: and \: BaSO_4 confirm the presence of SO^{2-}_3

 

 

Ba^{2+}\: \: and\: \: SO_4^{2-} have almost similar size,so the lattice energy is very high due to this reason f BaSO_4 is insoulble in water and acids
