In Williamson's synthesis of ethers, the nucleophilic substitution of an alkyl halide with an alkoxide ion is carried out. In case the alkyl halide is tertiary, elimination is favoured to form the corresponding alkene from the halide and not the ether.

Hence, the (2) option is correct.
