The solubility product for AgCl and AgI are 1.8\times 10^{10} \ and \ 8.3\times 10^{-17} respectively when ammonia is added,

Ag^{+}(aq) + 2NH_{3}(aq)\leftrightharpoons [Ag(NH_{3})_{2}]^{+}(aq)

this lowers Ag^+ concertration and allows more dissociation and dissolving the precipitate but AgI dissociation is so low that there is the negligible effect.
