Whenever the rate of flow of water changed it did so at a uniform rate, as is apparent from the graph. The reservoir was completely filled up from being empty in the above eight hours.

Question :

Correct Answer : 700

Volume of water filled in the first three hours

= Area of region ABDFG

= Area of ABC + Area of CBDE + Area of EDFG

= (1/2)*20*60 + (1/2)*(10+20)*60 + 10*60

= 600 + 900 + 600

= 2100 litres

Hence, the average filling rate of water for the first three hours = 2100/3 = 700 litres per hour
