The non-transition elements are the group 1 and group 2 elements (alkali and alkaline earth metals) with group 13- 18. Some of the characteristics of these elements are the following:
- Simple electronic configuration- These elements have the valence electrons in the s and/or p orbitals.
- Oxidation state- These usually have a limited number of oxidation states (for example, +1 or +2 in alkali and alkaline earth metals, or -1, 0, +1, +2, etc, in p-block elements).
- Compounds formed- They generally form ionic compounds ( by alkali and alkali earth metals) or covalent compounds (in non-metals).
Example- Alkali metals (Na, K), Alkaline earth metals (Mg, Ca), Non-metals (O, S, Cl).
