In diamond, each carbon atom undergoes \mathrm{sp^{3}} hybridization and linked to form other carbon atoms by using hybridised orbitals in tetrahedral fashion. In graphite, each carbon atom in hexagonal ring undergoes \mathrm{sp^{2}} hybridization and makes three sigma bonds with the neighbouring carbon atoms.

Fourth electron forms \mathrm{\pi} bond.

Diamond and graphite both of them are covalent.

Only graphite is used as dry lubricant.

Diamond form 3D network and graphite forms 2D network
