Describe the structure of the pollen grain.
Fertilization results from the presence of the pollen grain, the male gametophyte of a seed plant. Surrounding this usually small, round, or oval object is a strong, protecting wall. Comprising sporopollenin, the exine is a thick, sculpted layer that resists external force. The thin, smooth intine layer is formed from pectin and cellulose. While one or two vegetative cells build the pollen tube inside the pollen grain, one or two generative cells split to produce two male gametes for fertilization. Two or three cells overall. This structure helps seed plants to replicate effectively.
