Alpha diversity, sometimes known as species richness, is the total count of species within a specific ecosystem or location.
Beta diversity describes the variance in species composition between different habitats or ecosystems—it allows one to observe how species vary throughout environmental gradients.
Gamma diversity reflects the overall species richness over a large area, including many ecosystems. Crucially important for conservation planning, this classification helps one to understand biodiversity trends on several levels.
