By Down's process: Electrolysis of fused sodium chloride in the presence of CaCl{_{2}} and KF using graphite anode and iron cathode

- wherein

NaCl \rightleftharpoons Na^{+}+Cl^{-}

At cathode: Na^{+}+e^{-}\rightarrow Na

At Anode:

Cl^{-}\rightarrow Cl+e^{-}\\Cl+Cl\rightarrow Cl_{2}

 

 In down's process NaCl is electrolysed in presence of CaCl2
