Which one of the following characteristics is associated with adsorption?

  • Option 1)

\DeltaG is negative but \DeltaH and \DeltaS are positive

  • Option 2)

    \DeltaG, \DeltaH and \DeltaS all are negative

  • Option 3)

\DeltaG and \DeltaH are negative but \DeltaS is positive

  • Option 4)

\DeltaG and \DeltaS are negative but \DeltaH is positive

As learnt in

Change in Q during adsorption -

\DeltaQ=\DeltaH - T\DeltaS

- wherein

\DeltaQ can be negative if \DeltaH is sufficiently high negative value as -T\DeltaS is positive. In an adsorption process which is spontaneous, a combination of these two factors make \DeltaG negative.

Absorption is a spontaneous process. So in the equation,

\Delta G=\Delta H -T \Delta S,

\Delta G will be negative.

\Delta H will be negative because it is an exothermic reaction.

\Delta S will be negative because randomness of the universe decreases in the process.

Option 1)

\DeltaG is negative but \DeltaH and \DeltaS are positive

This option is incorrect.

Option 2)

\DeltaG, \DeltaH and \DeltaS all are negative

This option is correct.

Option 3)

\DeltaG and \DeltaH are negative but \DeltaS is positive

This option is incorrect.

Option 4)

\DeltaG and \DeltaS are negative but \DeltaH is positive

This option is incorrect.
