The rate of the reaction 2NO+Cl_{2}\rightarrow 2NOCl is given by the rate equation rate=k [NO]2 [Cl2]

The value of the rate constant can be increased by:

  • Option 1)

    Increasing the concentration of NO

  • Option 2)

    Increasing the temperature

  • Option 3)

    Increasing the concentration of the Cl2

As we learnt in

Arrhenius Equation -

Arrhenius gave the quantitative dependence of rate constant on temperature by the Arrhenius equation.

- wherein

k = A e^{-E_{a}/RT}

In k=InA-\frac{E_{a}}{RT}

k = Rate constant

The value of rate constant cannot be altered by changing concentration of reactants  but by changing temperature, as given by arrhenius equation. As temperature rises, so does k.

k=A_{e}^{-Ea/RT}

therefore, solution is 2

Option 1)

Increasing the concentration of NO

incorrect

Option 2)

Increasing the temperature

correct

Option 3)

Increasing the concentration of the Cl2

incorrect

Option 4)

Doing all of these
