The main step in the manufacture of H_{2}SO_{4} is the catalytic oxidation of SO_{2} with O_{2} to giveSO_{3} in the presence of V_{2}O_{5} and the reaction is exothermic, reversible and the forward reaction leads to decrease in volume and hence, low temperature and high pressure are the favourable conditions for the maximum yield.
