Metal which become passive when reacted with conc. HNO3:
Cr
Zn
Al
Both 1 & 3
Both chromium and aluminium become passive on reaction with conc. because of the formation of oxide on the surface of the metal.
Metals like iron, aluminium, cobalt and nickel become passive when treated with pure concentrated nitric acid. It is due to the formation of an extremely thin layer of insoluble metallic oxide (passivity) which stops the reaction. Passivity can be removed by rubbing the surface layer with sandpaper or by treating with strong reducing agents.
