As learnt in

Variation of electron gain enthalpy in periodic table -

  1. Electron gain enthalpy decreases down the group.
  2. generally, electron gains enthalpy increases (more negative) along the period.

-

Electron gain enthalpy increases along the period and decreases along the group but in between III and II period elements, III period elements have greater electron gain enthalpy because of very high electron density of II period elements.

Also, 17th group elements (Cl and F) have higher electron gain enthalpy than 16th group elements (O and S)

\therefore  Cl and F > O and S  (Electron gain enthalpy)

and citing above reasons, we can say

        Cl > F and S > O

\therefore   Overall, we have the following order of electron gain enthalpy:

        Cl > F > S > O

Option 1)

Cl < F < O < S

This option is incorrect

Option 2)

O < S < F < Cl

This option is correct

Option 3)

F < S < O < Cl

This option is incorrect

Option 4)

S < O < Cl < F

This option is incorrect
