SO2 is used in the manufacture of sodium bisulfate (NaHSO3) which is used as a preservative for jams, jellies, and squashes. Suphur dioxide has anti-microbial and antioxidant properties and inhibits the spoilage of food. 

NO2 is not used as a food preservative.
