The use of red light for "STOP" instead of blue or green is due to the following reasons:

  1. Red light has the longest wavelength (about 700 nm), therefore it may travel further and be seen from a wider distance.
  2. Red is universally associated with danger and caution, making it a suitable symbol for "STOP."
  3. The red light penetrates fog, rain, and dust more effectively than other colors, which improves vision in all kinds of weather.
  4. Also the red was utilized for railway signals in the nineteenth century. So, standardizing its use in traffic lights helps to provide consistency worldwide.

The blue color has a shorter wavelength and scatters more, making it less visible at great distances, particularly under poor weather circumstances, and green is already connected with "GO," so adopting it for "STOP" would be confusing for drivers.
