                                                    \\F = m\frac{v-u}{t}\\=500\times10^{-3}(\frac{0-50}{0.01})=-2500N

or                                                        =\ 0.5\times (-5000)\ =\ -2500\ N

The negative sign implies that the force by the nail on the hammer is in the opposite direction.
