2.9  A sample of drinking water was found to be severely contaminated with chloroform (CHCl_{3}) supposed to be a carcinogen. The level of contamination was 15\; ppm (by mass):

           (i) express this in percent by mass

Answers (1)

We know that 15 ppm means 15 parts per million.

Required percent by mass :

                                             = \frac{Mass\ of\ chlorofoam}{Total\ mass}\times100

                                            = \frac{15}{10^6}\times100 = 1.5\times10^{-3}\%
