3.4    Calculate the potential of hydrogen electrode in contact with a solution whose pH is 10.

It is given that pH of the solution is 10,i.e.,  the hydrogen ion concentration in the solution is 10-10 M.

                                                      

By Nernst equation we have :- 

                                               E_{Cell} = E_{cell}^{\circ}\ - \frac{RT}{2F}ln \frac{1}{\left [ H^+ \right ]}

So,                                                      = 0 - \frac{0.0591}{1}log \frac{1}{\left [ 10^{-10} \right ]}

or                                                         = -\ 0.591\ V

So the required potential is - 0.591 V.
