1.5   How can you determine the atomic mass of an unknown metal if you know its density and the dimension of its unit cell? Explain.

Answers (1)

We know that density is related to molar mass and edge length by the formula :

                                                      Density (d)= \frac{z.M}{a^3.N_A}

                                                                       M=\frac{d.a^3.N_A}{Z}

where, d=Density
            a3 = The volume of the unit cell
            M= Atomic mass
          Z = No. of atoms in unit cell
         Na= Avogadro’s number.
