Functions of the parathyroid hormone (PTH):
The parathyroid hormone is synthesised by the parathyroid gland.
Its main function is to increase the calcium levels in the blood.
It stimulates bone resorption which demineralises bones, hence increasing the blood calcium levels.
It stimulates calcium absorption from digested food.
It also promotes resorption and reabsorption of calcium from nephrons and renal tubules.
PTH also regulates phosphate levels in the blood by decreasing reabsorption of phosphate in the renal tubules.
Since PTH is responsible for bone resorption, it does so by activating osteoclasts (bone cells responsible for bone resorption and remodelling). Hence, PTH is directly involved in bone metabolism and remodelling.
