The functions of the thyroid hormone are given below:

The thyroid hormone is of 2 types- T3 and T4.

Tri-iodothyronine (T3):

  • It regulates the basal metabolic rate (BMR) and body weight.
  • It regulates body growth such as the ossification of bones, mental development, and brain function.
  • It regulates the calorie (energy) consumption rate of the body.
  • It also controls tissue differentiation and amphibian metamorphosis (the tadpole larva into an adult frog).
  • It increases the heart rate and force of contraction which increases the cardiac output.

Thyroxine (T4):

  • It has minimal hormonal activity. However, it acts as a reservoir for the T3 hormone.
  • It is responsible for metabolism, digestion, muscle function, and bone health.
