Write short notes on the functions of the thyroid hormone (TH).

The functions of the thyroid hormone are given below:
The thyroid hormone is of 2 types- T3 and T4.
Tri-iodothyronine (T3):
- It regulates the basal metabolic rate (BMR) and body weight.
- It regulates body growth such as the ossification of bones, mental development, and brain function.
- It regulates the calorie (energy) consumption rate of the body.
- It also controls tissue differentiation and amphibian metamorphosis (the tadpole larva into an adult frog).
- It increases the heart rate and force of contraction which increases the cardiac output.
Thyroxine (T4):
- It has minimal hormonal activity. However, it acts as a reservoir for the T3 hormone.
- It is responsible for metabolism, digestion, muscle function, and bone health.
