                                                                    Patriotism

Patriotism means love for one’s country but it does not mean hatred for other countries. It is an instinct for working hard and honestly for one’s own country and making any sacrifice, if need be, for its security, freedom and integrity. But it doesn’t mean imperialism, chauvinism which lead to the policy of expansion and conquering other countries.

Today, we owe our freedom to true and great patriots like Jawahar lal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Sardar Bhagat Singh and many more others who made uncountable sacrifices and suffered untold miseries to achieve the goal of freedom from the cruelty of British.  Even before the invasion of British in India, mighty patriots like Prithvi Raj Chauhan, Maharana Pratap fought for the country’s freedom from the exploitation of the Mughals. Guru Gobind Singh had sacrificed his family in the battle for freedom. So, patriotism is the spirit which seeks happiness through supreme sacrifice for the country.

Sadly, in today’s day and age patriotism has gone from a spirit to a label. The political leaders have forgotten the sacrifices of their ancestors and are focused on filling their pockets and exploiting the country. Naturally, they become a bad example for the future generation of leaders as such leaders cannot even give proper guidance to them. These leaders go through unscrupulous means to gain money and power. They trample over the weak. They are hypocrites who present themselves to be highly moral, religious and patriotic but are nowhere near anything of such feelings. Such handful people dishonour a true patriot.

True patriotism still exists in the hearts of the people, especially proven by the defence forces who under extreme climates protect the border. They protected the borders in the wars of India with Pakistan and China, which they fought with valour and bravery without any incentive. It is important such pure feeling of patriotism is instilled in children from a young age. They gradually learn the difference between the cowardly patriotism which begins with unsurmountable pride but ends in vain and true patriotism which genuinely celebrates the freedom of the country. Children should educate themselves with such patriotic tales.  Patriotism is what unites our diverse country
