The problem with the periodisation of Indian history by James Mill is that he divided the Indian history into Hindu, Muslim and the British period. It has been argued by many historians that it is not correct to periodise the Indian history on the basis of religion of the rulers. For example, many different religions coexisted peacefully when the country was ruled by Hindu kings.

The problem with the periodsation of Indian history that name mill offers is the superiority of British shown over Hindu and Muslim James mill has put Indian history into three periods Hindu,Muslims and British claiming that it was necessary to introduce European manners arts institutions and laws in India James mill views have several defends.

James mill divided indian history into three periods - hindu ,muslim and British .this periodisation has its own problem.It is difficult to refer to any period of history as hindu or muslim because of variety of faiths existed simultaneously in these periods .it is also not justified to characterize an age through the religion of the rulers of the time .what it suggest is that the lives and practice of others don't really matter .it is worth mentioning that even rulers in ancient India did not all share the same faith.

a) James Mill divided history on the basis of religion of the rules of the times. However, a variety of faiths existed simultaneously in these periods.

 

b) Mill, through his periodization suggested that British rule could civilize India. He was of opinion that the British should conquer all the territories in India to ensure the enlightenment and happiness of the Indian People. He thinks that India was not capable of progress without British help.
