Good morning esteemed principal, teacher and my dear friends. Today I will be speaking on the topic “ Social networking sites”. Ever since the age of the internet has begun, we have witnessed the boom in social networking sites. Social networking sites help us meet new people irrespective of long distances. From the very beginning, when letters got replaced by emails, everything got hassle free. To send or receive a message so quickly was a progress seen in the century. Which eventually progressed into the birth of ‘myspace’, ‘orkut’ and the boss of them all, ‘facebook’. A frenzy began when facebook came and all people were on board to join the site. People of all ages and gender joined in. A space where people could share the pieces of information they wanted to share with their friends or family from anywhere. The concept of having a big friends list and battle of likes somewhat decided the likeability of a person. Now, the hot networking sites are facebook, instagram, tumblr or pinterest, etc. where all offer the connection of a like minded audience. People have popularised their brands just by posting on social media for free. It is the cheapest advertising place. But as connecting the social media is, it is as unforgiving and brutal. It is said, “Not everyone likes you and not everyone will” which lies true in this age as web bullying and cyber crimes take place on such platforms. The more you show the world, the more they criticize. It sometimes becomes hard to find a balance between both. I am not saying that such places are bad but such platforms are meant to be of a recreational nature and to network with people and businesses. It needs to be a place for enjoyment. People need to realise the power of such platforms and put it to good use rather than filling it with hatred and malice. Thank you.
