(a) List in tabular form three chemical properties on the basis of which we can differentiate between a metal and a non-metal.

(b) Give reasons for the following :

       (i) Most metals conduct electricity well.

NON- METALS

They react with oxygen to form basic oxides.

2Mg+O_{2}^{--}\rightarrow 2MgO

They react with oxygen to form acidic or neutral oxides.

4C+O_{2}^{--}\rightarrow CO_{2}

They react with water to produce metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

Mg+2H_{2}O_{2}^{--}\rightarrow Mg(OH)_{2}+H_{2}

They do not react with water.

They do not combine with hydrogen except sodium, potassium and calcium which form ionic hydrides.

They react with hydrogen to form covalent hydrides.

(b) (i)  Metals conduct electricity because they readily give up their valence           electrons.In metals, electrons are free to move throughout the           structure, and gives rise to properties such as            conductivity. Metals contain free moving electrons.

        (ii) Fe_{2}O_{3}+2Al(s)^{--}\rightarrow Al_{2}O_{3}+2Fe+Heat

It is a thermite reaction.

This reaction is an exothermic reaction because this reaction produces a large amount of heat due to which iron metal is produced in molten form and use to join the tracks.
