Silver metal is attacked by moisture, acids and sulphur compound resulting in the formation of a black coloured layer of silver sulphide(AgS). This process is called corrosion.
The original colour and lustre of silver metal are restored by rubbing the surface with toothpaste as this removes the sulphide layer.
