(a) The trait which appears in the first generation (F1) after crossing contrasting traits is called as dominant traits (character).

The trait which is not expressed itself in the first generation (F1) after crossing contrasting trait is known as a recessive trait.

(b) Yes, it is possible that a trait is inherited but may not be expressed.

Example - When pure tall pea plants are crossed with pure dwarf pea plant. Only tall pea plants are obtained in the F2 generation.

 

 

Both tall and dwarf plants are obtained in F2 generation in the ratio of 3:1.
