(a) What does an ecological pyramid represent? State any two limitations that these pyramids have.
(b) Describe an inverted pyramid of biomass with the help of an example.
(a) Ecological pyramids represent the relationship between different trophic levels in terms of number, biomass energy.
The base of the pyramid represents the producers or the first trophic level while the apex represents the tertiary or the top-level consumers.
Limitations of the ecological pyramid:-
(b) Inverted Pyramid of biomass:
This means that the number of consumers is more than producers.
Example - The pyramid of biomass in an aquatic ecosystem like a sea is inverted because the biomass of fishes far exceeds that of phytoplanktons.
PC - Primary consumers ( Zooplankton)
PP - Primary producers ( Phytoplankton)
